Comfrey Harvest 2019

We are very close to finishing our 2019 Comfrey harvest. A warm, dry spell brought the herbs up to being ready for harvest quickly this year, but then the cold, wet weather came in and we were delayed starting due to this.

Comfrey Herb 2019

Actually this is the first year that we have been up against the constant wet weather. In years past there has always been plenty of dry days that have allowed us fairly easily to get the harvest completed. I do have to juggle with other business commitments, that sometimes do end up being on a dry day, which is extremely frustrating. However, after some concentrated efforts and great help from family, we have managed to get it within a few litres of completion. So that feels very good.

The comfrey herbs this year are small, due to the warm spell bringing the flowers out before the plant had grown to its full height. We wild harvest the comfrey and we only use the leaf of the plant for our comfrey oil. The leaves however are in very good condition and will produce a good quality comfrey macerate. I use organic sunflower to macerate the comfrey and I use a cold process maceration. No heat is applied and the process is entirely natural.

When harvesting we are careful to pick only the best quality leaves, free from insects, complete, undamaged, new growth, no older leaves. They are all green, juicy , luscious looking leaves.

We pick in a private piece of ground in Aberdeenshire, that is protected from the use of fertilisers and pesticides. There is visually no difference in the environment during or after the harvest. The bees and butterflies who love comfrey are undisturbed and unaffected as they love the flowers, which remain untouched.

We use the comfrey oil from this comfrey harvest 2019 in our Scottish comfrey range of artisan skincare products, which are some of our best sellers. Comfrey has been used since ancient times for skin issues and was known as ‘knit bone’ and ‘woundwort’.

Essential Oils – What to Look for when Buying

I recently did The Allergy Show at the SEC in Glasgow and had a lot of people looking at the essential oils and asking questions about oils that they had bought and advice on what to look for when buying them. So I thought it would be helpful to give some information on this at this subject here.

Citronella Organic Essential Oil

We will examine what to look for when buying essential oils to ensure that you are getting the best therapeutic quality.

1.  Essential oils should be in a dark coloured glass bottle to protect from light.
2. There should be a dropper to dispense the oils safely.
3. If you see the words fragrance oil or similar, it is probably a synthetic blend not a pure essential oil and so will have no therapeutic value. Look for ‘essential oil’ on the label.
4. Price is another likely indicator of quality, if all the oils in the shop or online are the same price, again they are unlikely to be of therapeutic grade.  Due to the hugely diverse nature of:  method of extraction; availability/success of harvest; the quantity of the plant required to make an essential oil,  prices will be widely different.  Sweet orange – easily obtained and extracted by expression, is more economic, whereas  rose needs around 4,000kg of petals to obtain1 kg of oil, and so is at the upper end of the price scale.
5. The latin name of the plant (and any chemotypes, if relevant) should appear on the label on the bottle, this is important as there are many different varieties of some oils, eg lavender eucalyptus, that have varying therapeutic uses and safety considerations.
6. Check the best before date – citrus oils (and some others) have shorter shelf lives, while base note oils such as patchouli have longer lives. Some oils degrade after a time eg black pepper, and change their use therapeutically . So it is always best to buy in small amounts.

7. If you are recommended to use the essential oils for internal use, ensure that the person selling them has completed a full course on essential oils for internal use and is insured for this (and/or is working directly with your GP/Clinician). This is an entirely different qualification and is usually not included in aromatherapy training here in the UK.

These are general suggestions, there are more detailed information which affects quality such as;  the country of origin, the colour and texture of the essential oils.  When buying for my business to supply you, I am very particular, dealing with only a few trusted suppliers. I also like to know how the oils are produced, ie that they come from an ethical supplier and of course I require an organic certification to stock them within my businsss.

These are a few baseline things that you should find helpful when looking for a good quality, therapeutic essential oil, but I am delighted to help with any further or more detailed queries that you may have. Just email me at: jacqui @ organicaj.co.uk

Lavender Essential Oil – Top 10 Uses

Welcome to another of Organica J’s Top Ten Uses! Here I focus on 10 helpful uses for Lavender essential oil. Remember there are a lot of varieties of lavender, which have different properties and scents.  Here we are talking on the variety lavandula angustifolia (true lavender). I have found after much experimenting with other varieties from various countries, to use a French lavender, which I personally like best for therapeutic use and in my products for what I need from its properties, and with its soft, but powerful fragrance.

Lavender is an aromatic evergreen shrub and the oil is made by steam distillation of the flowering tops. It is colourless or pale yellow in colour.

I use lavender in many of my products, such as my Gardener’s Hand Balm, Restful Evening Bath & Body Oil and Pulse Point Roller Ball , Lavender and Lavender flower Soap as well as being one of the ingredients in my Meditation Essential Oil Blend. It blends so well with many oils. I have used it recently in therapy blended with roman chamomile, sweet orange and ylang.

Lavender pure essential oil organic

There are many different uses for lavender oil, it has been used for a long time for numerous things, but I include what I view as my top 10 uses.

1.  Can reduce stress levels.
2.  For insomnia and disturbed sleep.
3.  Relief from muscular aches and pains.
4.  Can calm anxiety & eases fears.
5.   Easing headaches (rub one drop on temples) .
6.  Very helpful for minor burns.
7.  Relief from colds and flu.

8. A good insect repellant.

9. Helpful for pmt and menstrual cramps.

10. Can provide relief from sunburned skin.

If you feel that lavender would be a useful oil for you, you can buy it here.  There is also available a full range of other aromatherapy essential oils, with information on their uses available in the essential oil category on the website.  If you require further information on any oils, feel free to contact us by email or phone.

For using essential oils for specific or complex medical problems always contact a qualified aromatherapist or your GP.

Transcending Mental Toxicity with Mind Detox

I would like to introduce you to Sandy C Newbigging’s latest bestselling book, which is just amazing and can be entirely life-changing. Here is Sandy giving you a little taster of what is inside his new book: –

Where is my baby? Is there something wrong? My tired Mum asked. “You said you’d bring him back for feeding hours ago, but nobody’s brought him.” This is the conversation that my mum had with a nurse, hours after giving birth to me, and this was my welcome to the world. Being taken from my mum to spend hours alone without care and food. It didn’t matter that it was an innocent oversight by the hospital staff. I didn’t know that then. My upset feelings came from my perhaps natural, yet misinformed perceptions, which were fuelled by what I thoughthad happened.

Without knowing the reality of the situation, I continued on with my life unaware of the event ever happening, along with the toxic belief that had been unconsciously created that day. Subsequently, I had no idea the event and belief had been screwing with my life, from behind the scenes, for years. It wasn’t until I used the Mind Detox method (over three decades later) that the ramifications of being left alone after my birth were finally revealed and resolved.

BELIEFS FORMED BEFORE BIRTH AND BEYOND

I’ve since learnedthat even if we begin life with no spoken words, we are able to feel what’s going on from before our first breath. Later in life, we learn to use words to convey how we feel – but feelings are fuelling the formation of our beliefs from the getgo. As most of our beliefs are created before our teenage years, during a period in our life when we have little life experience, they are often misinformed and downright wrong.

Meaning that even the earliest of events can impact our entire life – unless we proactively discover our misinformed beliefs and update them. This is what the Mind Detox method is essentially for, and why it has positively impacted thousands of lives. We have all had difficult events happen to us, and as a consequence, formed a few unhelpful beliefs that are working against us being the healthiest, happiest and most successful versions of our self.

TRANSCENDING THE TORMENT OF MENTAL TOXICITY

MindDetox finds and fixes the mind-based causes of physical, emotional and life problems. If something negative is happening in your body or your life and you don’t know why, then this method can help. You can get peace with the past and,in doing so, update any misinformed beliefs that have been messing with your physical wellness, mental positivity and life success. You can discover that when you change your mind, by choosing to perceive your past, present and future in a new light, the body can heal and life improve, quickly.

As the name suggests, Mind Detox is a tool for letting goof anything toxic that is preventing you from being at your best. I believe we are born with brilliance built in, but if we are holding onto unresolved stuff from the past, it is harder to engage our natural states of inner peace and immense potential. Whether it is hurt, rejection, anger, resentment, guilt, grief, fear or sadness, for example, you can let go and be clear of it all, to the point that your past no longer limits you, or causes you upset, stress or suffering.

PURE PERCEPTION AND THE PEACE PRIZE

Peace with the past is possible. I know this from successfully Mind Detoxing hundreds of people, many of whom with rather extreme events and experiences needing resolved. How we perceive past events determines whether we endure problems or experience peace. Are we looking through a mental lens that is clouded by toxic assumptions, beliefs or attitudes? If so, we lack pure perception.

These three elements distort our remembering of things that have happened in our past and justify a reactive resistance towards what we thinkhappened. The combination of impure perception and reactive resistance creates chronic stress, negative emotions, problematic behavioural patterns and,in some cases, illhealth. In short, if there is an absence of peace with the past, then we can be sure there is also an absence of pure perception.

Our perceptions are pure when we see the entirety of reality, as it actually is, rather than seeing a falsified edited version of reality, based upon our assumptions, beliefs and attitudes.

Return to Reality for Resolution

Being at peace with the past requires us to return to the truth of reality, where resolution is waiting for us. Until we do this, our life is usually defined and determined by a series of fictitious fantasies, imagined by our mind, which are only a relative reality (similar to a dream or convincing story). It is the stories that we make up and tell ourselves about life – distorted by our impure perceptions – that hurt and hinder us over time. When we uncover the truth of reality, we automatically and immediately find the hidden treasures of forgiveness, wisdom, understanding and acceptance.

If truth and the prize of peace is what we want, we must be willing to question our assumptions and challenge our beliefs stemming from what we thinkhappened. We need to instead see what reallywent on. Mind Detox involves the answering of a series of questions that help us to discover the truth of any given situation and,in doing so, find resolution in the recognition of reality. Here are three introductory questions to ask now to get started:

  • Are my facts about what happened actually fictions?
  • Is the realproblem my perceptions of the past?
  • Do I want to be right or do I want to be at peace?

The simple act of questioning your assumptions can crack open an inner door through which peace becomes more possible. Little can be done to improve things if you are adamant that the past happened how you currently believe it did. However, if you are open to perceiving your past with fresh eyes and from a more empowered perspective, then the complete 5-Step Mind Detox method can work wonders.

Aromatherapy For An Ageing Skin

AromapothecaryAromatherapy Support and Blends for an Ageing Skin

I get asked for advice for ageing skin regularly, so I would like to look here at some support and aromatherapy blends that can be helpful for you.

Aromatherapy is a fabulous way to tackle the effects of the challenges your skin is up against that can potentially cause an ageing effect, such as weather, pollutants, stressors or simply the passage of time.

I had a client on the phone today, who said that she had really noticed Organic Lavender Soapthat her skin was so much more moisturised and soft after switching to use my range of organic soaps – they have organic ingredients and do not strip the skin of its natural oils, but rather moisturise further.  A great base for then using other oils/creams to moisturise further.

The basic care of self is important of course – good nutrition, exercise, plenty of sleep, helps the skin to appear at its best.  Pollutants such as smoking, synthetic chemicals in skincare and the environment, etc are best to be minimised coming into contact with where it is possible.  Protecting the skin and face in extreme weather conditions, or avoiding, again where possible, is a good strategy.

Aromatherapy on its own or in combination with regular massage can be extremely helpful to protect the skin and feed the skin properly.  Skin cell renewal can slow down with age and aromatherapy oils and massage can help minimise this.

My recommendation for carrier/base oils to use would be rosehip, evening primrose, sweet almond, wheatgerm and jojoba.  I personally use rosehip and evening primrose oil in my skin care regime.  I would recommend that all these oils can be used on their own as a carrier, but wheatgerm, I would use blended with perhaps sweet almond, as it is very viscose on its own.

Essential oils that I would suggest for skin regeneration and care would be carrot, frankincense, neroli, sandalwood, patchouli, sweet orange and lavender.

Neroli Essential OilI have a favourite combination that I have used for many of my aromatherapy clients in various forms depending on their individual skin type, their medical info and their life/emotional situation.  It is rosehip carrier oil with frankincense, neroli and carrot essential oil.  A good blend would be 10ml rosehip with 2 drops frankincence, 2 drops neroli and 1 drop carrot essential oil.  This would be great for body, for use on the face drop the quantities down to 1 drop of each essential oil in 10ml of rosehip carrier oil.

Some other different blends to choose from: sweet almond 5ml, evening primrose oil 5ml with 2 drops lavender, 2 drops sandalwood and 1 drop patchouli.  Again dropping down to 1 drop of each for use on face with 10ml carrier blend.

Or  jojoba 10ml with 2 drops sweet orange, 2 drops frankincense and 1 drop sandalwood. dropping to 1 drop of each for use on face.

Try out the different combinations to see what texture of carrier oil, and what scent of blended oils pleases you the best and feels best on your skin.  Gentle massage the oils into the body/face when you have time this can be a real pamper opportunity for yourself.

If blending your own is not for you, then you can try our ready made Aromatherapy Bath & Body OilsAromatherapy Bath & Body Blends blends without any preservatives, colours or synthetics.  All they contain are organic carrier oils and essential oils.

It is difficult I know in todays busy life to take time to look after yourself, but your skin will thank you in years to come if you do.  If you can find time to have regular massage (including a face massage) this will be so beneficial, not just for your skin, but for your complete health and wellbeing.

I rush around a lot, running my business,  but try to make sure that my skin is aways looked after.  It always feel good to keep skin moisturised and the feeling of putting good quality, nourishing oils on your face and body, I find extremely pleasurable.

For complex medical conditions always contact a qualified aromatherapist or your medical professional.
